Memorial and Scholarship Funds
Creating a lasting legacy fund in the name of a loved one is a great way to honor their life and memory. This is simple to do through the Catholic Foundation. In fact there are already more than 20 named scholarships managed by CFNEK. The minimum to establish a named endowment fund is $10,000, and you and others can add to it over time in any amount to help it grow. Funds benefit from the Foundation's prudent management following the tenants of the church and the CFNEK Investment Policy Statement.

The Linda A. Hoover Nursing Scholarship
Linda A. Hoover was a recipient of a scholarship that enabled her to pursue her dream of becoming an RN. Linda has established her own scholarship fund to pass on the gift of helping another person pursue their dream of becoming an RN.
The Linda A. Hoover Nursing Scholarship Committee selected My Phuong Le from Johnson County Community College as this year’s scholarship recipient! My Phuong Le is in her second semester of JCCC’s Registered Nursing Program. She holds three Associate's degrees in Liberal Arts, General Science, and Applied Science in Healthcare Information Systems. She also serves as Vice President of Services for Phi Theta Kappa, and is a companion volunteer for Faith Home Health and Hospice. Her passion for nursing was ignited during her childhood in Vietnam, where she had the opportunity to witness healthcare workers bridge gaps in resources with unwavering empathy. Her volunteer work with Faith Home Health and Hospice deepened her passion. Sitting beside patients in their final days, she learned that caregiving is not just about physical tasks, but about honoring humanity within each person. Whether it was painting with a dementia patient or listening to a former attorney reminisce about their career, she discovered the profound impact of connection.
My Phuong Le shares that her ultimate goal is to become an ICU nurse, where she can support patients during life’s most critical transitions. “This scholarship is going to help me achieve my goals, and allow me to continue growing into the kind of nurse who makes a lasting impact,” she shares. Congratulations, My Phuong Le!
Joyce K. Miller Scholarship Fund
The Joyce K. Miller Scholarship fund was established in December 2023 by Kathryn Miller in memory of her mom; Joyce K. Miller. Joyce K. Miller was a registered nurse and enjoyed caring for the elderly in a skilled nursing setting. Joyce always put her faith in God above all else.
This year's scholarship recipient of the Joyce K. Miller Scholarship Fund is Grace Benitez, a senior nursing student at Benedictine College. The Joyce K. Miller Scholarship has taken some of the financial stress off of Grace going into her senior year at Benedictine College. This scholarship will allow Grace to focus on her education and training. Grace's passion for nursing stems from personal experiences with her siblings and their health challenges. This summer, Grace was accepted into The University of Kansas Health System's prestigious Summer 2025 Nursing Extern Program, which provided her valuable hands-on experience. Grace says that nursing is not just a profession for her - it is a calling to serve, advocate, and make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.
The Enderle-Bogenrife Scholarship
The Enderle-Bogenrife Scholarship provides financial assistance to a Catholic high school student in Leavenworth or Wyandotte Counties, Kansas, who plans to attend a trade school. The scholarship will be applied toward the student's trade school tuition.
This year's scholarship recipient, Camila Arriaga, a student from Bishop Ward High School, will continue her education at Metropolitan Community College. She will be focused on learning all about auto collision and repair, and entrepreneurship. In Camila's scholarship essay and during the scholarship Check presentation program, Camila expressed how this scholarship would change her life by allowing her, as a woman, to succeed in the auto collision industry. This scholarship will help her achieve her dreams of owning her own auto collision business someday. Camila expressed her gratitude to God and her family, and the staff at Bishop Ward High School, who helped shape her into the person she is now. Congratulations, Camila Arriaga!

A Memorial Fund Story
Christine Mayne was the oldest of three sisters that attended St. Pius X Catholic School in Mission, Kansas, and Bishop Miege High School. Of the three sisters, she was described as the “brain.” In eighth grade her parents were told she had completed the math classes St. Pius X offered, so they gave her and a classmate the opportunity to take an algebra class at Bishop Miege.
After high school Christine went on to college to earn her Bachelor’s in Computer Engineering from Boston University, worked for four years at Cerner, then earned her MBA from Duke University which led her to work in Silicon Valley, California in 2000.
In 2005, she took a promising new job. Before taking the job she suffered a common knee injury, went to the doctor, where an appointment was set for orthoscopic knee surgery. On the second Monday at her new job, she went home from work, and that evening a blood clot from her leg moved up into her lungs and she died. This tragedy was the end of her life, but not her story.
Following Christine’s death, her parents, Jerry and Julie Mayne, wanted to do something to honor her memory. They used the proceeds from Christine’s savings and life insurance to start a scholarship through the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas (CFNEK). The award benefits a female student at Bishop Miege High School that is “first based on need and secondly giving priority to those who have shown an interest and/or aptitude for mathematics and or physical science.”
“The goal was to create a scholarship that would provide one full-tuition scholarship to attend Bishop Miege forever,” said Jerry Mayne. Initially the fund was not large enough to produce enough income for full tuition, but over time with more contributions from the family and investment growth the fund has grown to meet this goal. “I think most people would like to leave a permanent legacy,” continued Mayne. “It feels good to know that 50 or 60 years from now someone that might not be otherwise able to attend Catholic high school will be able to, and it will always be attributed to Christine’s memory.”
